My Relationship with Writing

Weekly Writing #1

This is the first writing assignment that we had. Was the starting point to look back to for the all future writing.

For most of my life I never wrote much but I was always placed in good English classes. I enjoyed most of the reading and writing I was given but rarely wrote on my own time. I enjoy thinking about abstract and emotional ideas and writing often helps to articulate these thoughts and feelings. I have a hard time finding the correct wording for lots of thoughts and intuitions I have when trying to write but it helps me, even just intuitively, understand and develop those ideas.

One of my favorite things that I've written is a high school assignment where I had to write why I'd make a good president. I ended up ignoring the assignment and wrote an unhinged story about taking over the world after fooling the world into voting for me. It was enjoyable and relieving, being able to simply write down whatever thoughts that come naturally.

Another thing I've noticed when writing is that it is extremely calming. It is a quiet way of externalizing an emotion without any visible aggression. There is also a natural pull to provide more personal detail and effect while writing while in a normal conversation I'd intentionally limit myself. In conclusion, writing is an enjoyable, beneficial act that I'd like to do more of for skills and enjoyment.
